is my keeping room a keeper?

i'm excited to be participating in amanda's DECORATING DILEMMAS PARTY because i have a decorating dilemma.

this is a little room off my kitchen. the floorplan for the house calls it a "keeping room". i'm not sure what a keeping room is but we keep watching tv in it, so we call it our tv room.

the previous owner painted it this nice chocolate brown, which i absolutely hate!

the room is 12x12 but, as you can see, it has a really wide window across one side,

which faces the back yard & only 1 wall that's not interrupted by a door or a window. the size & the lack of wallspace has me perplexed.

here's where our tv resides, all 27" of it. the drawers hold art supplies & dvds for the grandchildren. it's sitting where it is because that's where the cable connection is.

what on earth can i do in here?

it needs to stay as our tv room. the laptop is nice to have in here for my husband, but we have 3 other computer work stations in the house so we could lose this one, as well as the printer & the work table.

i brought the long bench in here to place under the wide window to put toys under but realized it made a great coffee table so i turned it around.

the sofa is o.l.d. & can go (sniff, sniff), the armoire & bookshelves i really like but if there's a better solution i can move them to somewhere else? in the house.
should i get a loveseat, instead? & a couple of chairs?

as it is, there's no room for any other furniture.

i'd keep the brown walls IF i could come up with a scheme to lighten the room up with whatever at the windows & different furniture.

and that & furniture placement are my big problems. well, i do have other problems, as well, but those are the ones pertaining to this room.

help me, please.

thank you.

i'll be waiting in the keeping room for your suggestions :) hmmm-maybe for now-i'll call it the waiting room.

Okay, don't hate me. I love your wall color. My first thought was how nicely it goes with your pretty blog banner. ;) I think that chocolate brown is in right now.

A nice black-framed shadow box with that same material as a background and a few of those star fish would be a nice pop on the wall.

To save some money, what about some burlap mistreatments for the windows? You could add some wide black ribbons as pulls/decoration.

You could tie the furniture together without being matchy-matchy by painting and lightly distressing the coffee table and maybe even the desk. The cute bookcases could even go on either side of the desk to make it look like one big piece, and then maybe you'd have room for a low/long storage bench under that window. Put some baskets in it, pillows, etc.

What about framing some of your grandkids' artwork over the desk since they are in there?

Your sofa looks comfy. Have you thought about slip covering it? I don't know how often the grandkids come over, but white would be so pretty, and when they come to visit, you could remove it so it doesn't get dirty.

Maybe recover the pillows too bring some more white and brown in, and add some pretty blue?

I like the TV armoire. I think it needs a little something on top. Maybe a collection of pretty baskets, creamware, or something.

If you really had a good budget (which I don't), some crown molding in white would make the brown walls really pop. :)

Thank you so much for joining the party! :)

you are a genius! i'm having such a problem just thinking of putting away my beachy stuff & now - i don't need to. it's gonna be my "beachy tv room"!

maybe on the armoire, i can put my beach sign that i won & blue glass & my big jars of shells?

i have some burlap-like curtains but thought they'd be too dark, but maybe not.

not sure the sofa's worth slipcovering but it's a great idea. and at least 1 & usually 2 grandkids are here most weekdays.
i've been looking for a place to display their artwork (only 1 is old enough to do any & it's all dinosaurs, dinosaurs, dinosaurs)

crown molding would be awesome, wouldn't it? my son has a remodeling business but i'm a low priority customer ;)

i've really let this room get me down because of the color, but now i think i can move forward. thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't follow Amanda's comment...she gave you wonderful suggestions!

I just wanted to say that I like the wall color, too. It's unique.

You have some great pieces in that room. Rearranging and redecorating with what you already have on hand would be a quick fix.

I don't think I can offer any better suggestions that Amanda. She really hit the nail on the head. :) I also love the wall color, but think you need some window treatments, to soften those enormous windows. They are beautiful!

Thank you for sharing!

I LOVE the wall color! I think you should put some white crown molding along the ceiling to match the molding on your windows and floor. This will brighten the room up quite a bit.

I would paint the coffe table black and distress it like Amanda said.

I also like the idea of burlap with black ribbon on the windows...that's what I'm doing in my living room!

I think the artwork on your walls needs to be bigger. Like take all the small black framed pieces, and put them together in one grouping maybe over by the desk, then put some much bigger pieces flanking the window behind the couch. I like your couch too, BTW.

One last idea, if you go visit this post:

There is a gorgeous idea that I think would be awesom in your room, maybe above the big window?

I like Xazmin's comment about the black framed pics behind the couch...they need to be bigger.

I have always loved that couch...so comfy & cozy. If you decide to get rid of it you know where I am. Rob & I want a smaller smaller couch. Can't actually take a chain saw to the one we have.

Crown Molding-Yes
Burlap Mistreatments-Yes
Grandkids Arwork Framed-Yes

You should try and find a paddle/oar to hang on one of the walls, or maybe a couple to hang on two of the walls.

I would not distress the bench.

What about a big rug smack dab in the middle of the room? Something light blueish.

That's about all I have for right now.

It doesn't make any difference what others think, it is what makes you happy - decide what you don't like about the brown and then change it - there are always mistints at the paint store - I would go for a lighter color to bring in the beachy summer feel.

I painted my bedroom chocolate and loved the look, just not for me. I found out I need things to be light for me to really be happy in them.

So glad you liked some of the suggestions. :) Of course that's what they are...suggestions. If nothing works for you, but you get some of your own inspiration from what's said here, then all the better. :)

Hope you are having fun mingling!! :)
